A terrific morning to all of you focused prospectors, devoted salespeople, and motivated businesspeople! It’s time to greet another day with enthusiasm and excitement … and why not? This is just one more opportunity to make some incredible things happen for yourself and the future of your business, so let’s get to it.

I know for a lot of agents that a particularly bad day, off week, or a poor series of events can lead to discouragement, frustration, and even thoughts of giving up and getting out of the business. What I’ve discovered over all the years that I’ve been doing the type of work that I do is that in hindsight, those days and events seem rather insignificant when compared to the big picture.

So why is it that when they’re happening that it feels so overwhelmingly aggravating? Why do we so often get SO deeply pulled into a tailspin or a downward emotional spiral? I think that a year in the life of our business is a lot like watching a parade. As you stand at street level watching it go by, you see one section, one float, one group of people at a time. Some of the parts of the parade you might find really cool, and other parts can be a bit ‘ho-hum’. And if you’re like many people, when the clowns come by you avoid eye contact and even slip to the back of the crowd to be sure you don’t have to deal with a flower that shoots water at you or the freaky looking red ball nose.

The point is, if you watch the parade from a helicopter above you’d see the big picture … the good stuff and the bad all strung together in one long series. On the street you just take one thing at a time and decide whether you like it or not.

So why not start looking at our businesses from more of a ‘top-down’ or big-picture viewpoint? Stop getting so caught up in momentary challenges, temporary setbacks, or disappointing days. Remember, there are a lot more great wins to come—many more adrenaline-filled days and fist-pumping victory dances! There will be killer listings that you’ll take, amazing deals you’ll put together, and grateful clients who can’t do enough to thank you and refer you to their friends. But you have to deal with the clowns too.

Perspective is critical … the ability to see the big picture is vital … and, good or bad, none of it lasts forever. So come on—let’s go watch the parade that is your business. The band is playing and the floats are fantastic this time of year. Make today count!
